New Chargers dressed in blue and gold kicked off the new year with excitement
Dressed in Charger blue and gold, the University of New Haven community gathered in the Beckerman Recreation Center to officially welcome the Class of 2029 at the University’s traditional Convocation ceremony. With cheers and spirited energy, the event marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the University’s newest students, including the most selective incoming undergraduate class in University history and a record number of transfer students.
This year’s Convocation theme “Charge Ahead” will serve as a yearlong inspiration for students to take ownership of their academic, professional, and personal growth.
“In a fast-paced and ever-evolving world, we want this theme to encourage you to stay focused, build resilience, and develop the skills needed for lifelong success,” said Ophelie Rowe-Allen, Ed.D., dean of students and vice president of student affairs, who opened the ceremony. “Throughout this year, starting today, you’ll see programs, workshops, and initiatives across campus that build and reinforce this theme.”
Following an invocation by University chaplain Martin O’Connor, M.Div., J.D.,Jessica Goddu, executive director of undergraduate admissions, officially presented the Class of 2029 to the campus community.
Students marched into Convocation, greeted by cheering faculty and staff
'Embrace change. Push your boundaries’
Several campus leaders shared reflections and advice with the incoming class, beginning with Jessica Harbaugh ’26, president of the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA). She encouraged students to consider how they want to contribute to the Charger community.
“I want you to reflect on what kind of Charger you want to be,” she said. “Embrace change. Push your boundaries.” Harbaugh then invited students to affix their official class pins to their shirts, symbolizing their place in the Charger family.
Nathan Seifert, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry and recipient of the 2025 Excellence in Teaching for Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty award, emphasized the values of accountability and resilience embodied in the University’s Charger Compact, the community’s statement of shared principles.
“We always make mistakes,” he said. “But the most important thing is to be transparent about those mistakes, accepting accountability, and working to correct them.”
'Embrace the power of presence’
Nancy Savage, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, encouraged students to embrace the opportunities ahead. She urged them to “embrace the power of presence,” contribute to classroom discussions, and participate actively in campus life.
“Your future will be impacted by the choices you make as a student,” she said. “Select courses not merely out of necessity but with the goal of broadening your horizons.”
Athletics Director Devin Crosby brought high energy, celebrating the start of the University’s NCAA Division I era
Matt Caporale, executive director of career development, introduced students to “Charger 11,” a set of core competencies specifically designed to prepare them for success in the elite global workforce of the future. These include things such as critical thinking, systems thinking, cultural competence, and resource management.
“Build your academic knowledge, engage in hands-on experiences, and develop the foundational skills employers and graduate schools are looking for,” he advised.
Adding to the excitement, Devin Crosby, athletic director, brought high energy to the stage, celebrating the Class of 2029 as the most selective in University history, and marking the beginning of the University’s NCAA Division I era.
He urged students to show their Charger pride by following Charger Athletics on Instagram and attending games. To the crowd’s delight, Crosby surprised a student with a new pair of Air Jordans, while other students won Nike-branded Chargers gear throughout the event.
President Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D. encouraged the Class of 2029 to embrace their limitless potential
'There’s limitless potential ahead’
Closing the ceremony, President Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D. reflected on the collective promise of the incoming class. “Everyone in this room shares a common purpose,” he said. Acknowledging that many new students may feel nervous, he reminded them that such feelings are normal and even a sign that they care deeply about their new journey.
“This is your moment,” he said. “There’s limitless potential ahead. The University of New Haven is absolutely worth it, but at the end of the day, it’s on your shoulders. Some of your dreams may change, but keep pushing and exploring. Build lifelong networks. Explore your passions. Remember this moment—it’s your destiny in your hands.”
The event concluded with the students and University leaders joining together in a spirited call and response: “Activate!” “Power On!”
