Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D., President

Jens Frederiksen

Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D., joined the University of New Haven on March 1, 2024, as its seventh president. He is an innovative higher education leader with extensive experience in many facets of higher education administration, including enrollment management, fundraising, and academic/corporate pathways.

He is differentiating the University in an ultra-competitive marketplace, and his goal is for the University to become an international powerhouse for preparing the next generation of elite talent to excel in the global workforce of the future.

Overseeing a major transformation of the University’s West Haven campus, he spearheaded one of the most significant land acquisitions in the University’s 100-year history, acquiring a 130,000-square-foot commercial space and 12 acres of land directly adjacent to the University’s main campus to establish a best-in-the-nation Center for Innovation and Applied Technology. The University also accepted an invitation to transition to Division I for athletics and is developing a new state-of-the-art on-campus home for its Pompea College of Business.

President Frederiksen has led a significant expansion of the University’s international reach, highlighted by its plans to become the first university in the U.S. to establish a branch campus in Saudi Arabia as well as the launch of an Afghan Women’s Scholars Program to help respond to this humanitarian crisis.

He has helped create collaborations with top companies, leading to new career opportunities for our graduates. All of this has created unprecedented visibility and awareness, leading to a record number of applications and the best selectivity rate in the University’s rich history; tens of thousands of mentions in the media; and a new annual fundraising record that triples the previous high.

Dr. Frederiksen joined the University of New Haven from Fisk University, a highly ranked historically Black university in Nashville, Tennessee, where he has served as Executive Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Enrollment Management. He has served as a professor at Vanderbilt, Fisk, and the University of the South, and as a consultant for the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

He earned bachelor's degrees in political science, history, economics, and philosophy from Vanderbilt, where he was a member of the men's tennis team. He also earned both a master's degree in interdisciplinary social and political thought and a Ph.D. in contemporary political theory and comparative politics from Vanderbilt.

A native of Denmark, Dr. Frederiksen and his wife, May Wood Frederiksen, have two children, Gunnar and Lilly.
