Mikayla Brown '24 is looking forward to beginning her studies at the University of New Haven this fall. She will find at least one familiar face on campus, as her father, Adam Brown ’94, ’19 M.S., has been appointed as the University’s new deputy chief of police.
“I am very proud of everything he’s worked so hard for,” said Mikayla, who is planning to study biochemistry. “He works very hard – both in his career and as a parent.”
Adam Brown, who spent 20 years with the Connecticut State Police, will now be working alongside his former criminal justice classmate, James Gilman ’93, chief of the University’s police department and a fellow veteran of the Connecticut State Police.

Chief Gilman was one of several officers from the University’s police department, along with Brown’s family members and West Haven Mayor Nancy Rossi, who saw Brown sworn in as the department’s new deputy chief during a ceremony that took place recently on the West Haven Green.
“It’s wonderful to be a University of New Haven alum and to now have my own kids at the University,” said Deputy Chief Brown, who previously served as executive director of public safety and global security at the University. “When I was a student, I liked that the professors were very well-versed in the field and that they brought great experience to the classroom. They were book smart and also very successful in their careers, and they shared their experience.”
Deputy Chief Brown’s son, Trevor Brown ’21, plans to follow in his father’s footsteps. A criminal justice major, he is looking forward to beginning his own career in law enforcement.
“I am happy that my dad is so involved with the University,” he said. “He is perfect for this position, and I was very happy to see him sworn in.”
Deputy Chief Brown is looking forward to continuing to be an active member of the University community and to ensuring the safety of his fellow Chargers.
“The officers at the University are excellent,” he said. “They bring a wealth of experience and training. It’s also great to work with the students at the University.”
