Recently, the University of New Haven has received queries from applicants concerned that they might be penalized in our admissions procedures because of disciplinary action taken against them by their schools if they participate in one of the walkouts and protests in the wake of the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The history of our nation is replete with examples of movements that began with a few voices that became many, and that have resulted in lasting change. The University will not penalize you for raising your voice in peaceful protest, for upholding the values about which you feel passionately.
To the contrary, as high school students across the country have organized authentic, meaningful protests, we at the University of New Haven have been proud of the important ways in which they have utilized their constitutional right to free speech to further their cause.
