Bachelor of Science In Accounting

A University of New Haven education means power," says Caroline Consorte ’16, ’17 MBA, a staff accountant at Marcum, one of the largest independent public accounting and advisory services firms in the nation. "It helps you prepare for the career you desire, and it helps you create connections in the community that can help you get there."

Impact a company’s bottom line

Accountants have the critical task of providing a comprehensive picture of a company’s financial health so that business owners can make informed decisions that directly impact their company’s bottom line. That is why the field of accounting is a breeding ground for business leaders. In fact, John D. Rockefeller, widely considered the wealthiest American of all time and the richest person in modern history, starting working at age 16 as an accountant. Today, more than half of Fortune 100 CEOs have a degree in business, economics, or accounting.

As an accounting major at the University of New Haven, you’ll participate in a well-rounded education that goes beyond the numbers. You’ll learn how to impart technologically-driven insight and even solve white-collar crimes.

The B.S. in Accounting program is also available online (degree completion).

The program offers three tracks. You will choose one of the following:
  • Financial accounting: This is the track if you want to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Corporate accounting: You’ll develop the skills necessary to thrive in the corporate environment and become a CMA (Certified Management Accountant).
  • Forensic accounting: Focus on financial crimes, including investigation and white-collar crime, through coursework in accounting and through the world-renowned Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences.

At the University of New Haven, you can earn the certifications you need even sooner than you would at most other schools. As an undergraduate, you can meet or exceed requirements for the CPA exam in most states, or you can begin the process of becoming a CMA before you even graduate. You might also choose to enter the Fast Track program, which allows you to complete your bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in 4 years or 5 years.

You'll Also:
  • Have access to the latest accounting, tax, business and legal databases, data feeds, and analysis software used widely in today’s workplaces and in graduate research.

Licensure and Certification Information

The University of New Haven offers a B.S. Accounting, M.S. Accounting and M.S. Taxation each designed to help students prepare to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. Please note that students cannot earn CPA certification simply by earning a college degree. According to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) website, students will first need to determine where they intend to sit for the CPA exam, since the education requirements to sit for the CPA exam are different for every state. Most states require 150 total semester hours to sit for the CPA exam. Some state licensing board regulations include narrow educational requirements such as specific semester hours in accounting and business courses, and there are additional considerations such as experience, age and residency that must be considered.

The University of New Haven’s 121 credit hour B.S. in Accounting program does not meet the educational requirements for CPA licensure in:

  • AL, AK, AS, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, GU, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MP, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NY, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, VI, WA, WV, WI, and WY.

While the BS Accounting program consists of 121 credits, the additional required coursework may be completed at the University through our graduate accounting program.

The University of New Haven strongly encourages that you review the requirements and criteria for the state in which you intend to sit for the CPA exam in consultation with your academic advisor.
