SPN101 BEGINNING SPANISH I

Students will be introduced to the elementary grammatical structures of the Spanish language and to vocabulary related to basic usage and daily conversation topics. Credits: 3

SPN102 BEGINNING SPANISH II

Students will develop their knowledge of the basic structures of Spanish language and their awareness of Spanish culture and society by means of enriching their vocabulary and improving their oral and written communicative skills. Prerequisite: Beginning Spanish I or the equivalent of one semester of college-level Spanish. Credits: 3

SPN105 SPANISH FOR BEGINNERS

This language course is designed for students wishing to develop a novice level of Spanish. The course focuses upon the development of beginning level proficiency within critical language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Students will understand basic grammar and lexical structures, write short texts and develop conversational skills with a beginners degree of competency. Prerequisites: None. SPN201 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I

Students will consolidate and build on the main grammar and lexical structures of the language while expanding their vocabulary and a variety of registers. The learning objectives at this stage include improving listening comprehension, enhancing oral proficiency, progressing in reading comprehension and improving writing skills, as well as increasing awareness of cultural, social and historical issues in Spain. Prerequisite: Beginning Spanish II or the equivalent of two semesters of college-level Spanish. Credits: 3

SPN202 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II

Students will increase their understanding of previously-studied grammatical structures and properly use different verb tenses while expanding vocabulary and achieving a wider variety of registers. The learning objectives at this stage include enhancing listening comprehension and oral proficiency, improving writing proficiency and reading comprehension, as well as gaining a more complex insight into Spanish customs and style of life. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish I or the equivalent of three semesters of college-level Spanish. Credits: 3

SPN211 INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH: DAILY & PRACTICAL USES

This course strengthens oral communications proficiency in Spanish at the Intermediate level. Instructional emphasis is placed upon social and cultural customs in Spain. SPN221 SPANISH IN ACTION: LANGUAGE, CINEMA & MULTIMEDIA

This intermediate level course builds on your proficiency with the four basic skills (reading, speaking, writing and listening) through a direct exposure to Spanish language and the innovative use of audiovisuals as a vehicle to learn Spanish language and culture. SPN263 CULTURE & IDENTITY

Through the study of literature, music, film and other cultural products, as well as through creative exercises and interactions, this course fosters integration and understanding of the Central American culture, the ability to communicate in Spanish at a high-intermediate level, the establishment of elements of comparison with the culture of the United States and a critical understanding of the Central American reality, with a focus on Costa Rican culture. SPN301 ADVANCED SPANISH

Students will use complex structures of Spanish grammar in contextualized exercises with consistency, as well as demonstrating an emerging ability to write about abstract topics appropriate to the course content and understanding the main cultural issues presented in a variety of written and audiovisual materials. Not only will they express and understand ideas and opinions accurately and confidently but will also be able to defend a point of view and interact with the host community with a marked degree of fluency, using culturally appropriate communication strategies. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish II or the equivalent of at least four semesters of college-level Spanish. Credits: 3.

SPN304 SPANISH FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS

Students will enhance their knowledge of academic Spanish through reading, writing, grammar practice and oral activities. The focus will be on grammatical accuracy and vocabulary expansion. In-class activities will focus on developing Spanish language skills with emphasis on understanding written authentic texts, improving linguistic skills and developing the writing process. Prerequisite: must be Spanish native and/or heritage Spanish speaker. Credits: 3

SPN305 SPANISH FOR BUSINESS

This course prepares students for successful communication in the Spanish-speaking business world. It emphasizes essential business terminology and language situations in business contexts such as writing a commercial letter, holding a meeting, or carrying out a business presentation. The student will also gain an understanding of the cultural traits that distinguish the business environment in Spain. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish II or the equivalent of at least four semesters of college level Spanish. Credits: 3

SPN311 ADVANCED CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH: DAILY & PRACTICAL USES

This course is designed to strengthen oral communication proficiency in Spanish. Through active conversational exercises inside and outside class, you will develop learning strategies for more effective oral communication for social interaction, formal and informal conversation, argumentation and public presentation. SPN351 SPANISH YOUTH SINCE 1975: CHALLENGE & ACHIEVEMENT

This course examines expressions and representations of Spanish youth since the death of Franco in 1975 and surveys consequential social issues such as drug and alcohol use, housing, joblessness, political activism, education reform, and family life. The course employs popular culture, history, literature, film and sociological research to gain access to the heart and mind of Spain’s youth today. Prerequisites: Advanced Spanish. SPN352 SPANISH CIVILIZATION & CULTURE

The aim of this course is to analyze Spanish culture from both a historical and sociological perspective. The course also has an intercultural component comparing home and host customs, traditions and values. Students will study the history of Spanish civilization from pre-historic to modern times while interacting with the reality of modern day Spain in order to interpret and understand Spanish culture. This course will provide a comprehensive perspective and general knowledge of Spanish Cinema. SPN354 CULTURAL VISIONS THROUGH SPANISH CINEMA

Using Spanish cinema as a vehicle to expose you to the wide variety of cultural realities and social challenges occurring in Spain today, this course helps develop both your linguistic and intercultural skills as well as your critical ability to apprehend and evaluate the socio-cultural and political forces of Spain you experience. SPN356 MASS MEDIA IN SPAIN

This course will examine the role of the mass media in modern day Spain and its evolution over the last three decades since the end of Franco’s dictatorship in 1975. As an alternative way of tracing the contemporary history of Spain, the course will enable you to better situate the Spanish case and to set up a contrast between a Mediterranean media model and a so-called Atlantic media model. SPN357 CULTURE & CIVILIZATION OF ARGENTINA

Following a survey of Argentine history from colonial to modern times, this course analyzes the contemporary culture and civilization of Argentina from historical and sociological perspectives. SPN361 SPANISH CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE

This course will examine some of the major Spanish authors from the end of the 19th century up to the present day. It will introduce major topics and theoretical approaches relevant to their writing, and the texts will help analyze changes in Spanish culture over the last century. SPN362 SPANISH THEATER WORKSHOP

Through a survey of Spanish literature and drama since the 16 th century and through a practical workshop in both dramaturgy and play acting, this innovative course is structured to develop your written, oral, and expressive communication skills in Spanish. The theme of the course is globalization, which is discussed first through a historical perspective by reviewing International Business theory, and then through our reading of Thomas Friedman´s The World is Flat , and finally by reading additional news articles and by watching related audiovisuals offered during the course. SPN399B INTERNATIONAL MARKETINGS

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a proper understanding of opportunities and risks associated with marketing products across political and cultural boundaries, with special reference given to the European and U.S. markets. The course focuses on the basic principles and tools of marketing and how they are differently applied in both markets. This comparison is strengthened by focusing on practical analysis of the marketing mix (product, price, distribution and promotion) and strategy of successful companies in Europe. Through building theoretical foundations and practical skills of effective negotiation and communication, this course analyzes the psychological, cultural and technical complexities of successful negotiation. SPN420 ADVANCED WRITING SEMINAR

Students will further develop writing and analytical skills through exposure to a wide variety of texts in order broaden their understanding of the Spanish culture. Written assignments are the true essence of this course as they will be involved in the creation of the school magazine.
