CHN101 BEGINNING CHINESE I

The focus of oral Chinese for beginners is on using Chinese for communication in daily life. This course teaches basic conversational sentences and vocabulary quickly through word substitution and extension practice. The Chinese language is taught in phonetic English spelling (Chinese spelling system known as Yu Pin Yin) with exposure to the simplified Chinese characters. Incidental references to Chinese history, culture, and business put the language into context. Credits: 3

CHN102 BEGINNING CHINESE II

Designed for the student having had little prior contact with the Chinese language, Beginning Chinese II builds on the basic structure of the Chinese language learned in Beginning Chinese I and develops speaking abilities through class practice and grammatical drills. Additional Chinese characters are studied step-by-step. Prerequisites: Beginning Chinese I or equivalent. Credits: 3

CHN103 BEGINNING CHINESE I

This beginner’s course in Chinese language establishes foundations in five areas of basic language competency: listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural skills. Through practical, communicative and intercultural field activities, students build basic communication and intercultural skills. Prerequisites: none. Language of instruction: Chinese. Credits: 4

CHN111 BEGINNING CHINESE CONVERSATION I

This beginning course in Chinese language develops speaking skills, listening skills, grammatical structures, language functions and vocabulary. Using practical, communicative and intercultural approaches, students build a solid foundation for conversational skills while developing intercultural competence. Prerequisites: None. Language of instruction: Chinese. Credits: 2.

CHN201 INTERMEDIATE CHINESE I

This course is designed for the student having had one year of college-level Chinese language instruction. Intermediate Chinese I builds on the basic structures learned at the beginner level. Intermediate study of Chinese language, both conversational and written, involves cultural training through exposure to Chinese arts, history, economics, and society. Prerequisites: Beginning Chinese II or equivalent. Credits: 3

CHN202 INTERMEDIATE CHINESE II

This course is conducted entirely in Chinese and focuses on extensive reading of Chinese classical and modern fiction, drama, and poetry. Intermediate Chinese II builds on the basic structures learned at the Intermediate I level, and students will continue refining their proficiency in the four areas of language competency in order to communicate effectively in Chinese. Prerequisite: Intermediate Chinese I or equivalent. Credits: 3

CHN203 INTERMEDIATE CHINESE I

This course develops intermediate Chinese skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural awareness. Through practical, communicative and intercultural field activities, students build basic communication and intercultural skills. Prerequisites: one year of college-level Chinese language. Language of instruction: Chinese. Credits: 4

CHN301 ADVANCED CHINESE

This course is intended to develop students' proficiency in speaking, writing, listening, and reading so that they can be at a level necessary for advanced literature and culture courses. It will emphasize composition and oral discussion as well as concepts necessary for a sophisticated appraisal of literature and culture in the target language. This course will be conducted entirely in Chinese. Prerequisite: Intermediate Chinese II or equivalent. Credits: 3

CHN302 ADVANCED CHINESE II

CHN305 BUSINESS CHINESE

Business Chinese introduces the basic vocabulary and professional terminology commonly encountered in business articles and media. Both reading for information and reading for accurate textual understanding are emphasized. The course also introduces basic cultural, professional, and business etiquette. As part of active language acquisition, and in order to expose you to diverse cultural situations, the instructor organizes onsite learning exercises in real business environments. Prerequisite: Intermediate Chinese II or equivalent. Credits: 3

CHN401 ADVANCED CHINESE III

Designed for students having had three or more years of college-level Chinese language instruction, Advanced Chinese III builds conversational and written skills and provides cultural training through exposure to Chinese arts, history, economics, and society. More specifically, this course develops your proficiency in the four areas of language competency: listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course will be conducted entirely in Chinese. Prerequisite: Advanced Chinese II or equivalent. Credits: 3.

CHN402 ADVANCED CHINESE IV

Designed for students having had three and a half or more years of college-level Chinese language instruction, Advanced Chinese IV builds conversational and written skills and provides cultural training through exposure to Chinese arts, history, economics, and society. More specifically, this course develops your proficiency in the four areas of language competency: listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course will be conducted entirely in Chinese. Prerequisite: Advanced Chinese III or equivalent. Credits: 3
