Philip H. Bartels '11 Hon.

Philip H. Bartels is an attorney with Shipman & Goodwin LLP, one of Connecticut's largest law firms. He is of counsel to the firm.

Expertise

Mr. Bartels currently focuses on federal court litigation and pro bono work for Shipman & Goodwin, concentrating on corporate governance, contracts and litigation for tax-exempt organizations. He is a former magistrate of the Connecticut Superior Court, and early in his career, served as an associate in the Corporate and Litigation departments of the Hartford law firm of Day, Berry & Howard.

Community Service

Mr. Bartels has served on several boards and committees for Cornell University, including the Committee on Alumni Trustee Nominations and the Cornell Council, and most recently as a vice president for his Class of 1971. He is a member of the administrative board of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., on the board of trustees for the Paleontological Research Institution, also in Ithaca, and is former counsel and president of the Greenwich, Conn. Audubon Society. He was also a member of the Town of Greenwich, CT Conservation Commission (a municipal land use regulatory agency) from 1984-2000, and was its Chair from 1992-2000. Mr. Bartels has served on the University’s Board of Governors for over 20 years, including roles as vice chair and chair. The University of New Haven awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2011.

Education

Mr. Bartels graduated from Cornell University cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Government and from the University of Chicago Law School with a Juris Doctor degree.

Personal

Mr. Bartels and his wife, Susan Stappers Bartels, have two children and two grandchildren. They live in Riverside, Conn.
